Wire Rope FAQ

Wire ropes are made up of multiple strands of wire and a steel core to form a strong and sturdy rope, typically used for rigging, cabling, lifting, and hoisting. Wire rope can be created using a range of materials, including stainless steel, galvanized wire rope, and monel metal. Wire rope provides flexibility, strength, and durability; perfectly suited for a number of uses.

It is important to choose the correct type of rope for your requirements;

  • Stainless steel rope is commonly found in marine structures as it does not corrode and is impact resistant.
  • Galvanized steel, on the other hand, is best for aerospace and industrial use as the rope is more flexible and will not weld with other items.

Although galvanized wire rope is less expensive than stainless steel wire rope, it is weaker; stainless steel rope offers much more strength and is much less likely to corrode. Crane ropes are also available and offer the highest strength, as well as being resistant to corrosion. Shackles and wire rope slings attach wire rope to a load securely and help transport a load in a controlled and safe way.

Synthetic rope is cheaper than steel wire rope and used for a variety of domestic and commercial jobs.

Nylon rope is the strongest type of synthetic rope and can carry a heavier load than a similar steel cable. Nylon rope is extremely flexible, which is why many people use it for mooring and anchoring.

Polypropylene rope is extremely light and will also float on water, which is why it used so often in the marine industry. Polyester rope is the best choice of rope for general use as it is resistant to abrasion and UV rays.

For protecting, reinforcing, and connecting ropes, we stock bull dog grips, thimbles, tensioners, and shackles.
