Manual Chain Hoists / Powered Chain Hoists / Block and Tackle

Manual chain hoists, also known as block and tackle, are portable hoists that allow the lifting of large capacities in a variety of environments.

They are more affordable than powered hoists and ideal for situations where regular movement of the hoist is necessary.

Manual hoists do not require power and are operated by hand, however, they require a larger amount of effort to lift heavy loads. Manual chain hoists can be used with beam clamps or plate clamp magnets to fix on to a beam or girder.

MANUAL CHAIN HOISTS

Manual chain hoists are used to lift materials vertically, however, lever hoists can also be used in order to enable a horizontal lift of materials.

There is a range of hoist trolleys available that use manual chain hoists with wheels or rollers so that a load can be transported along a beam or scaffolding.

A push trolley is attached to a beam and allows a load to be manually moved, whereas a geared trolley uses gears so that an operator can pull chains to move the trolley along a beam.

Other equipment that can be used with manual chain hoists include plate clamp magnets and snatch blocks.

POWERED CHAIN HOISTS

Powered hoists are an ideal alternative to manual hoists as they can move heavy objects at a faster pace and are generally more durable. Powered hoists enable the lifting of heavy materials or items from one floor to another, typically used on scaffolding or attached to beams on construction sites.

Electric scaffold hoists provide reliable lifting of heavy materials, no matter what level or floor. These electric chain hoists transport loads vertically and is controlled by an electric motor which consists of a number of speed settings that can be changed depending on your requirements.

A motorized travel trolley is another form of electric hoist that attaches to scaffolding and beams with wheels to enable the hoist to move horizontally.

MORE INFO

  • ATEX chain hoists are required for work in explosive environments, such as waste disposal sites, petrol or gas sites, and chemical production plants.

  • In these environments, explosive gases or dust can spark a manual chain hoist, which is why it is crucial to use an ATEX chain hoist which is spark-proof and produced especially for hazardous sites.

  • ATEX trolleys are also available to use with manual hoists in spark prone environments.

  • In circumstances where the lifting of heavy machinery is required, toe jacks are a great piece of equipment to help with lifting the machinery off of the floor.

  • Three-phase hoists are the most commonly used electric hoists; they can lift a load weighing up to 7,500kg and produce three waves of AC power. The three waves of power allow a steady flow of electricity and energy to the hoist to ensure there is enough of a power flow to keep the electric hoist working efficiently.

  • Three-phase hoists also allow an even energy distribution which results in less stress on an electrical supply. Single-phase hoists, on the other hand, use just one single voltage of power and are ideal for sites that do not have a three-phase power supply. Single-phase hoists are typically more expensive and do not provide as much power to a hoist.

  • Other hoists available to buy include battery hoists and pneumatic chain hoists. Pneumatic chain hoists use compressed air for power so they are better suited for situations where the hoist is needed for a long period of time; an electric hoist that runs on power could overheat and uses up much of a sites power supply.
